Her skin was soft

Her skin was soft as a ripe peach
Her eyes sparkled like the morning dew
Her nose tilted in a seductive way
I wanted to reach out to touch her hair
Sitting side by side that we now were
But we were in church at morning prayer

Thank you Thom

Thank you Thom for all the prompts in the past
Making me scribble down words thick and fast

Somehow fitting modern words in a period piece
About Maori tribes trying to come to peace

Or getting so involved with the story line
I hadn't memorized all the words in time

Luckily writing is a haphazard art
Readers tend not to worry once they start

I am sure we will all find a new home soon
Goodbye for now Thom, I wish you good fortune

What naive wish

What naive wish that man should live in peace
For conflicts arise soon after wars do cease
A lasting calm in this world sublime
Has so rarely been at any time

We've fought each other for almost everything
For land, food annd water even worshipping
Lives are lost and our children cry
Who on Earth knows the reason why?

A terrible truth on which we do not act
That wars encourage inventiveness in fact
Atomic bombs, radar, submarines
Don't come from framing idyllic scenes

Humans have gone quite mad in this new culture
For poisons are now used in our agriculture
Bees endangered to sell certain brands
Wars waged across once tranquil lands

Note: The use of pesticides has severely endanged and killed bees in many countries of the world. If bees and other pollinating insects are wiped out humanity will be in serious trouble.

I dream of those days

As I get older I wish I could dance
To the music of time but legs say "No"
These days are lost in the midst of pain
Remembering days in nursery school

Oh to be running so wild and free
In the middle of the forest green
Telling stories to the fairies there
Lunching with pixies on a toadstool

But one thing that makse me so upset
A week later I went there again
I was told by wise owl waiting there
That I was too old, so felt a fool

So I dream of those days not long past
How innocent our small lives were then
Where adults ways were quite unknown
And I met fairies at the wishing pool

As I get older I wish I could dance
To the music of time but legs say "No"
These days are lost in the midst of pain
Remembering days in nursery school

The morning after

It was the night before the morning after
Full of booze and uproarious laughter
My mind was clearly was not in gear
Couldn't tell whether I was here or there
She took me places I need not know

By spending it in foolish drinking
When I awoke I was not at home
And clearly I was also not alone
Deep in trouble I am sure of that
With three stray dogs I know not how

In the blink of an eye

In the blink of an eye she was gone
I felt like a shorn sheep
Without the one I loved

But love is like that, gone in a flash
Snatched away by a thief
Whilst rooted to the spot

Tottering around like a drunk man
Grovelling in the dust
Lashed by regretful pride

When remorse is finally over
Tattered ego reborn
Start over, spin around

Be single again glancing slyly
At every enticing curve
Maybe that one perhaps?

Someone else

Sadness always comes with the question, why?
Hearts break, hopes lost, all you want to do is die
But all your eyes can do is cry, cry, cry

But the sun still shines above in the sky
The bees they buzz, flowers bloom, birds do fly
Showing that you should really try, try, try

Someone else will see that you need a guy
You'll forget those sad days that have gone by
For you'll be the apple of his eye, eye, eye

My dog looked at me

My dog now looked at me doubtfully
Hesitant about his morning walk
As thunder grumbled veiled threats outside

He wagged his tail as I donned my coat
Not his usual wag but obedient
No doubt preferring somewhere to hide

We headed for the park where he'd bark
And sniff at all the other dogs there
Which other owners could not abide

But t'was deserted as the darkened skies
Started to pour down with rain and hail
Now there was nowhere at all to hide

My dog kept on looking up at me
His eyes treating me with such scorn
Sulking head down now not by my side

That we were so soaked there is no doubt
When the weather eased we headed home
My wife there with towel and grin quite wide

My dog's tongue it was now hanging out
A smirk upon his face washed with rain
Shook himself before he went inside

I came home early

I came home early
She was on her yoga mat
Now in the cat pose

"Hi" she said quickly
You've caught me at it again
Slightly out of breath

"Can I watch?" I asked
As she did a seated pose
Then up and down dog

"Cup of tea?" I asked
"Be just a few minutes more"
She said in a squat

When I had returned
She was doing a plow pose
As she finished off

Now red in the face
Glowing, a beam in her eyes
She rose to kiss me

That little child

How the passing years are cruel
Reminding me of times gone by
A father with his little girl
On my knee, she was only three

Then when she was growing up
Our angel running, smiling now
As we explored where birds did sing
Wading streams just daughter and me

That little child was now a teen
With long legs going her own way
Bending rules with her impish grin
Texting friends at night till almost three

She has gone her own way now
But comes home again and again
Thankyou Dad for the way you were
You were the best one that could be

Threads of longing

How I hate that mournful whistle
Just like a night train leaving
Now echoing though my mind
Of the day that you left me
With words that were so unkind

Life's full of broken promises
That gnaw at our grieving souls
Doubts right from the very start
Ringing in my fuddled brain
Since the days we've been apart

But wheels must keep turning
As fall turns to wintertime
With footprints in the cold snow
I'll cut those threads of longing
For your touch that set me all aglow

Remember when

Do you remember when?
The sun seemed to shine bright all day
Even if rain came pourong down
We would still go outside to play

How we laughed how we screamed
Splashing each puddle in our boots
We would sail sticks and paper boats
In streams from the rainwater chutes

But sunny days were the best
We'd go exploring woodland streams
Seeing wild foxes and rabbits too
And I still go there in my deams

When I see kids of today
Bent over, thumbs jabbing away
Lost in their artifcial world
Blind to the beauty of the day

It's dark and quiet

I wake from my sleep
It's dark and quiet
I reach out, but you are not there

Then I remember
You've left me alone
You have gone and I know not where

Seven years now passed
And you fought so hard
Once your body had not one hair

You tried everything
Pills, transplants and all
Daitly injections with no care

Then you said goodbye
The final bell was rung
You closed your eyes you were not there

Now I wake each night
You disturb my sleep
To say you love me still, I swear

I wake from my sleep
It's dark and quiet
I reach out, but you are not there

The last straw

I wonder whether the creator being in forming the Earth zillions of years ago thought much about that last link in his or her jigsaw puzzle of this planet Earth that was humankind?

I am sure natural selection was planned so humans would forsake their apelike cousins and think things out a bit more than other species.
This was probably a test to see how far they could go to improve their comfort by keeping warm in winter’s snow and ice and shielding themselves from the sun as the sun beat down in summertime.
I bet he was so proud as tools were made and holes dug and all the things on earth were used to make human’s families safe and well and speaking of that how pleased he must have been when the first well was dug to find water when the rivers and streams ran dry.
Then over the last few hundred years he must have sat back in pride to see how well sickness and diseases were controlled and cured but a little concerned that his humans kept of finding ways to make explosions to fight their neighbours who looked or spoke differently from each other.

The last straw was when mankind decided to change the climate by burning the forests, polluting the seas and creating waste and killing off all the beautiful creatures and plants that he had formed millions of years ago to keep everything stable so he or she sadly shook his head and said “this is the last straw it is time to break that link, we will send them all to Mars.”

A cailin in her prime

Her pasty face intrigued me
Her eyes were sad and wan
They told me her sad story
Of her better days long gone

She sat there in the doorway
Her scent was apalling
Beer bottle in her hand
She now began to sing

Sounding liker an Irish air
Despite her squalor now
She sang of Erin's isle
To return there was her vow

I thought of who she had been
Revelling with a beau
A cailin in her prime
So many long years ago

Then a few weeks later on
Her alcove quite empty
Passing her nightly squat
As she'd died while still twenty

Note Cailin is Irish for - Young girl

The children watched her

The children watched her
And she watched them too
As the mixture of play
And learning began that day

Would the boy with red hair
Stand behind a barber's chair
And the girl with eyes so green
Be actress on the movie screen?

Blunt scissors, crayons, paint
Shapes drawn bold or sometimes faint
Budding artist or engineer
Filling the page without a fear

Telling tales in the school
At home playing in a pool
Learning numbers one to ten
Head bent, hand now holding pen

Seeing kids’ knowledge grow
Creative minds emerging slow
Then one seeking much more to know
Knowing they will have far to go

Years pass you meet them again
How they’ve grown, a small stab of pain
“Thanks Miss you really were the best”
An inward smile, you've passed he test

A day in the life of the Sun

The night slips silently away
We wait for the new day to dawn
Sun grinning on the horzon
Scintillating for a few seconds
Before leaping into the sky
Carrying hope for each of us

Then hiding behind dark rain clouds
Spilling water down, down on us
Dawdling with nonchalant purpose
Across the now drenched countryside
As though late for date somewhere
Like a mooching boy with stick in hand

The warm golden orb appears again
Flying high in the sky warming us
Flagrantly opening flowers petals
Unfurling leaves cheering us up
Making its way till the days end
Winking goodnight to one and all

She touched me

I didn't notice her at first
Chatting with the crowd
But then she touched me on the arm

A sensuous ripple went through me
Like pins and needles
Looked in her eyes and was spellbound

Still in a trance, she then whispered
"Let's get out of here"
As we stood in the dark shadows

She took my hand, pulled me away
Fingers soft and warm
We walked unnoticed from the room

"Let's away from this rancid place"
While I was thinking
A miracle none saw us leave

We walked down the esplanade
The tide was now full
Sea water lapping close to shore

"Come tell, me who you are" I asked
"I'm Penny's sister"
"She ditched you, it's my turn now"

"How is it I never met you?"
"Interstate of course"
Warning bells now rang within me

"So you know all about me then?"
"All that I need to"
Her head on my shoulder laughing

Where are you?

Just where, oh where has my true love gone
Will she come back singing a sweet song
Will we hug and dance in the forest deep
Or will she just curl up with me to sleep?

To wake and look at me with eyes of green
Telling me of the things she has seen
As she holds me close and breathes in my face
We kiss and rest in loves sweet embrace

But when I wake I am cold as stone
To find she has now left me all alone
But there is a note written in her hand
"My love, you'll find me in some other land"

Must I search for her taking Charon's boat?
As the wind whistles a mournful note
To find her in some Arcadian bliss
To greet me in sylvan glade with a kiss

Are you looking at me?

"Are you looking at me?" she asked as she walked in the lift before him then turned round to face the now closing doors.

His face reddened but he apologised to her if she though that, saying that it was difficult not to look at other people in a confined space like this other than to stare at the doors waiting for them to open.

"No, no, don’t be upset it is just that I though perhaps we knew each other from way back as I thought you recognised me”.

“You didn’t’ come from Mitcham in South Australia did you?” she asked looking into his eyes, “as I am sure your face rings a bell too”.

Just then the lift reached the 6th floor, he should have got out, but entranced he pushed the close button and smiled at her.

“Me too” he then said "let’s swap numbers" giving her a card which she took, nodding and then said to him “I’ll ring…I promise”.

There's a world down there

On board ship we sail
Navigating oceans blue
Wet trail 'neath our bow

There's a world down there
Sometimes murky sometimes clear
Where we rarely go

There's sad wrecks of course
And detritus of our waste
We care not to know

Fish, whales and crabs too
Organic creatures below
No place else to go

We sail blithely on
No concern but ourselves
And our precious dough

Take me back

Take me back, take me back do
To that sandy shore
When I am no more
Sprinkle my ashes in the deep

Let the waves kiss me goodbye
As forever I lay
Do not cry for me
For there is no need to weep

Cry for the oceans and seas
From whence all life came
Fish, whales, dolphins too
Crabs, shrimps and others that creep

You've trashed land and rivers too
Forests are aflame
Icecaps they now shrink
This rich world you've made so cheap

Now you humans take the blame
Change your ways quickly
Before it's too late
Greed's been sown, it's time to reap

She'd watch me

It was a beautiful morning
The sea was calm as the sun shone
Now rising from the distant sea
Like a bare breasted nubile maiden
And throwing light in my window
The ancient, teasing man that was me

Then as she crossed sky's mighty arc
She'd watch me as I spent my day
Travelling, working all crammed in
Even shining on my girlfriends face
She'd be there peeking from the clouds
I love them both but is that a sin?

She was my friend and warmed my heart
Better than her small friend the moon
Who deigned to visit in the dark of night
Sailing her chosen path and time
Coming, humming a mournful song
While sun winked in the now failing light

Penny Leigh

How I remember Penny Leigh
Cute, smart, flighty for ever free
Thought she would be the girl for me

Brown arms and legs face full of smiles
We'd go exploring for miles and miles
Through the wild woods and over stiles

In streams with nets and our jam jars
Catching creatures with hoops and yahs
So far away from trucks and cars

However I hadn't seen the sign
Her eyes no longer looked in mine
And for her I did weep and pine

So things changed as up we grew
No longer did we bill and coo
She scorned me, I was sad and blue

Empty my life seemed to be bleak
When those childish bonds they did break
For a year or so we'd not speak

But thank mercy we did meet again
She smiled at me to ease the pain
My joy at this I could not contain

We sat and talked her lips I kissed
She told me of her life I'd missed
We cuddled as we reminisced

All was well though the cost seemed great
As those few years I had to wait
So glad I got my precious mate

What's happening?

What's happening to our world?
As we now cringe in mortal fear
Are terrified of rulers vain
That will destroy all we hold dear

Happiness is so hard to find
Despite our Earth's once rich domain
Too many greedy and cruel in charge
Some of our leaders seem insane

With forests felled and icecaps gone
Wild animals search for a home
Our waste strewn across all the Earth
Our rivers filled with toxic foam

What's happening in our world
Please let there be a hopeful light
To see a future for all kids
I fervently pray that I'm right
